a piece for joanne Thompson

It means a lot to be asked to make a piece for another designer, even more so when it’s an artist I admire so much. Joanne Thompson is an otherworldly jewellery designer, her pieces embody precision and modernity with tactile intricacy. She asked me to design a piece to celebrate her birthday and wedding anniversary incorporating one of her own diamonds. Neither of us had collaborated with another jewellery designer in this way before, it resulted in a meaningful connection and a fun project to work on. For the brief I was asked to design a single or double band combination using a 4mm diamond with this hand cut sharp green tourmaline, all other aspects of the design were open to creative interpretation.

This commission was to be a new engagement ring, to celebrate many years of marriage and also my 50th Birthday. I knew I wanted a design which would incorporate the diamond from my original ring and this was to be combined with one of shivani’s signature unique statement gemstones. We selected a stunning green tourmaline and she gave me lots of options for the placement of the stones on the rings and we ended up selecting two rings, with one stone on each, to be worn together or separately. I found the experience of working together on this very exciting and enjoyable, shivani made it such a pleasure.

I had seen the rings a few years ago at Goldsmiths’ Fair and they really made a strong impression, never leaving my mind. I looked at many other jewellers designs but shivani’s always remained the favourite. I love the purity of the designs, the clean lines and minimalist nature. The unusual placement of the stones on the ring is so striking and effective, yet still very comfortable to wear. The craftsmanship is exquisite. The green tourmaline I selected has the most unusual cut, I adore it. I honestly could not be happier with this commission, I will treasure these rings always.
